Press Release - Arkansas Carry requests Fort Smith repeal illegal gun ban

E-mail Print PDF
Arkansas Carry has requested that the City of Fort Smith immediately repeal city ordinances 18-67, 18-75 and 7-29.  These ordinances pertain to a ban on the possession of firearms on city property, which is in conflict with Arkansas law.

Arkansas Carry recognizes these ordinances as violating the Arkansas state firearms preemption law, which states, in part:

A.C.A. § 14-16-504 (2012):

As used in this section, "local unit of government" means a city, town, or county.

A local unit of government shall not enact any ordinance or regulation pertaining to, or regulate in any other manner, the ownership, transfer, transportation, carrying, or possession of firearms, ammunition for firearms, or components of firearms, except as otherwise provided in state or federal law.

Arkansas Carry has requested that the Fort Smith City Directors immediately rescind these ordinances.
